About La Ceiba

History, geography and the vibe of Honduras's eco-tourism capital — the gateway to the Caribbean coast and the Bay Islands.

Where you are

La Ceiba is the capital of the department of Atlántida, on the northern Caribbean coast of Honduras. It sits at the base of the Nombre de Dios mountain range, wedged between the 2,436 m Pico Bonito and the Caribbean Sea. Population is around 220,000, making it Honduras's fourth-largest city. It's the main mainland jumping-off point for Roatán, Utila and the Cayos Cochinos marine reserve.

A short history

Originally a small Pech and Tolupan indigenous settlement, La Ceiba was founded as a port town in 1877 and named after a giant ceiba tree that stood by the harbor. In the early 1900s it became the headquarters of the Standard Fruit Company (now Dole), and the banana trade built much of the modern downtown. After the banana economy declined, the city reinvented itself around eco-tourism — Pico Bonito National Park was created in 1987, and the Cayos Cochinos reserve in 1993. Today La Ceiba is best known as the eco-tourism capital of Honduras.

The vibe

La Ceiba is more relaxed than San Pedro Sula and more authentic than the Bay Islands resorts. The downtown 'Zona Viva' on 1ª Calle is the nightlife spine. The malecón along Playa Miramar has been recently rebuilt with walkways, food stalls and a Ferris wheel. Expect humid heat, sudden tropical downpours, friendly locals and a strong Garífuna and Caribbean cultural overlay layered on top of mainstream Honduran culture.

Carnaval de La Ceiba

Held the third Saturday of May, the Gran Carnaval de la Amistad is the biggest party in Honduras — a week-long festival honoring San Isidro that ends with a massive parade down Avenida San Isidro, live music on multiple stages, costumed comparsas and several hundred thousand visitors. Book accommodation months in advance for that week.

Insider tips

  • Locals call themselves ceibeños. The full name is San Isidro de La Ceiba.
  • The city is laid out on a grid: avenidas run north–south, calles run east–west. 1ª Calle is the malecón.
  • Most of what visitors care about is in a 2 km strip between the malecón and the bus terminal.
