Arrival & Check-in

What to expect at Goloson airport (LCE), customs, getting a SIM card, and your first taxi into town.

4 min read ยท Local insights

Landing at Goloson (LCE)

Golosรณn International Airport is small โ€” one terminal, a handful of gates, and you'll be at immigration within minutes of stepping off the plane. Have your passport, return ticket and DJRV QR code ready. Immigration officers usually stamp 90 days by default but you can ask for less if you want.

Customs

You can bring in up to USD $500 of goods duty-free. Standard restrictions on agricultural products, weapons and large amounts of cash (>USD $10,000 must be declared). Bags are X-rayed on exit; random checks are common but quick.

Getting into town

Downtown La Ceiba is about 10 km east of the airport (15โ€“20 minutes). Options:

  • Official airport taxi โ€” USD $15โ€“20 to the center, fixed rate, ticket booth in arrivals.
  • Uber / InDriver โ€” works in town but not always available right at the terminal; walk 100 m past the parking lot to meet drivers.
  • Hotel pickup โ€” many hotels arrange transfers for $10โ€“15. Confirm in advance.
  • Rental car โ€” major agencies (Avis, Budget, Alamo, local operators) have desks inside.

SIM cards & connectivity

Tigo and Claro are the two main carriers โ€” both have kiosks at the airport. A tourist SIM with ~5 GB of data runs L 200โ€“300 (USD $8โ€“12). Bring an unlocked phone and your passport. Coverage is excellent in the city and along the coast, patchy in the mountains. Most hotels, cafรฉs and restaurants offer free WiFi.

Hotel check-in

Standard check-in is 3 PM, checkout 11 AM or noon. You'll be asked for your passport (they may photocopy it) and a credit card for incidentals. Tip the bellhop L 20โ€“50 per bag. Most rooms include AC, hot water and WiFi; budget options may have ceiling fans only.

Insider tips

  • The airport has one ATM (HSBC) โ€” withdraw some Lempiras here for your first taxi.
  • If you arrive after 9 PM, the airport empties fast. Pre-book your transfer.
  • Drivers usually speak basic English near the airport; less so once you're in town.
