La Ceiba Beaches

From the malecón to Playa de Perú, Sambo Creek and the Garífuna beaches east of town.

4 min read · Local insights

Right in the city

La Ceiba sits on the Caribbean and has beach access from the city itself. The malecón along Playa Miramar has been recently upgraded with walkways, restaurants and a Ferris wheel. It's lively in the evenings but the water near the river mouths isn't ideal for swimming — head east for cleaner beaches.

East of town

The coastline east of La Ceiba is where the swimmable Caribbean beaches start.

  • Playa de Perú — about 15 minutes east, palm-fringed and quieter on weekdays.
  • Sambo Creek — Garífuna village 25 minutes east with several beachfront restaurants serving fresh fish.
  • Corozal — small Garífuna community with calm shallow water, good for families.
  • Nueva Armenia — further east, departure point for some Cayos Cochinos tours.

West of town

Toward Tela, beaches get longer and emptier. Playa El Porvenir and the long stretches around La Ensenada are quiet but services are limited — bring water and snacks.

Insider tips

  • Avoid swimming near river mouths after heavy rain — runoff makes the water cloudy.
  • Weekends bring local crowds, especially Sunday. Weekdays are nearly empty.
  • Most beach restaurants in Sambo Creek will cook your own catch if you go out with local fishermen.
