Honduran classics

You'll find these everywhere from street stalls to sit-down restaurants.

  • Baleada — thick flour tortilla folded over refried beans, crema and queso. Add eggs, avocado or meat.
  • Plato típico — grilled beef, beans, rice, fried plantain, cheese, avocado and tortillas.
  • Pastelitos de carne — fried pockets of seasoned ground beef.
  • Pollo con tajadas — fried chicken over green plantain chips with cabbage slaw.

Caribbean & Garífuna

La Ceiba's coastal location means seafood is a daily highlight.

  • Sopa de caracol — conch in coconut broth, often considered the national dish.
  • Pescado frito — whole fried fish, usually red snapper, served with rice and tajadas.
  • Tapado — Garífuna seafood and coconut stew.
  • Ceviche de camarón or pescado — fresh shrimp or fish in lime.

Where to eat

Mercado San Isidro and the surrounding streets have the cheapest authentic food. The Zona Viva on 1ª Calle has restaurants and bars catering to tourists and locals. The malecón (Playa Miramar) has beachfront seafood spots. Sambo Creek, 25 minutes east, is the place for a full Garífuna seafood lunch.

Insider tips

  • Coffee is excellent and cheap. Try Café Hondureño or any small panadería for a strong cup.
  • Tap water isn't safe — drink bottled or filtered. Ice in established restaurants is usually fine.
