Getting Around La Ceiba

Taxis, colectivos, rental cars and how to get to/from Golosón airport.

4 min read · Local insights

From the airport

Goloson International Airport (LCE) is about 10 km west of downtown. Official airport taxis charge USD $15–20 to the center. There's no rideshare at the airport, but Uber and InDriver work in town. If you booked a hotel, ask about airport pickup — it's often cheaper.

Around the city

La Ceiba is compact and most things in the center are walkable during the day. For longer trips:

  • Taxis — flag them down or call. Short trips inside the city run L 50–80 (USD $2–3). Always agree on price before getting in.
  • Uber & InDriver — both work in La Ceiba and are usually cheaper than street taxis.
  • Colectivos (mototaxis & shared vans) — cheapest option for short trips, L 15–25 (USD $0.60–1).

To other cities

Long-distance buses leave from the main terminal on the southern edge of town.

  • Hedman Alas — premium service to San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa.
  • Diana Express, Cotraibal — frequent service to Tela (1h), Trujillo (3h), San Pedro Sula (3h).
  • Direct minibuses to Sambo Creek, Jutiapa and other coastal villages leave throughout the day.

Renting a car

Useful if you plan to explore Pico Bonito, beaches and Garífuna villages on your own schedule. Major agencies (Avis, Budget, local operators) are at the airport. Expect USD $40–70/day for a small SUV. Roads to main attractions are paved; some side roads to lodges are gravel.

Insider tips

  • Don't drive at night outside the city — animals on the road and limited lighting.
  • Save your hotel's address in Spanish on your phone to show drivers.
  • Carry small bills — taxi drivers rarely have change for L 500.
