The river
The Río Cangrejal forms the eastern boundary of Pico Bonito National Park. It runs through a deep granite gorge surrounded by primary rainforest. Most commercial trips cover a 7–10 km section with Class II–IV rapids — challenging enough to be exciting, manageable for first-timers with a guide.
Operators
Three well-established outfitters run the river daily.
- Omega Tours — German-Honduran owned, oldest operator, full safety gear and certified guides.
- Jungle River Lodge — runs the Class II–III family section and harder Class III–IV runs.
- La Moskitia Eco-Adventures — also offers multi-day combinations with hiking and culture.
What to expect
Half-day rafting trips run roughly USD $50–70 per person and typically include transport from La Ceiba, all gear (helmet, PFD, paddle), safety briefing, the 2–3 hour river run and a snack or lunch. Minimum age is usually 12 for Class III+ runs, 8 for the easier family section.
Add-ons & combos
Most operators bundle rafting with canyoning (rappelling down waterfalls), hiking to El Bejuco falls, ziplines, or overnight stays at their jungle lodges.
