The seasons
La Ceiba has two seasons. The dry season runs roughly February to May — sunny, warm (28–32°C / 82–90°F) and the easiest time to visit. The rainy season runs June through January with peak rainfall October–December. Rain usually comes as intense afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle, and mornings are often clear.
Best months for each activity
Plan around what you want to do.
- Hiking Pico Bonito: February–May (drier trails, fewer mosquitoes).
- Whitewater rafting: June–November (higher water = bigger rapids).
- Cayos Cochinos & snorkeling: March–May and September–October (calmest seas).
- Beaches & sunbathing: February–May.
- Birding: October–March (migratory species arrive).
- Carnaval de La Ceiba: third Saturday of May — book months ahead.
- Garífuna Settlement Day: April 12.
Hurricanes
The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30, peaking August–October. Direct hits on La Ceiba are uncommon but possible (Mitch in 1998, Eta and Iota in 2020). If a major storm is forecast, ferries to the Bay Islands shut down and flights may cancel — build buffer days into your itinerary if you're traveling in those months.
